9:00 a.m. Departure from the hotel. Who are the Singaporeans? And where did they come from? You\u2019ll find the answers to these questions by visiting three historic neighborhoods in Singapore: Chinatown, Little India, and Kampong Glam. These neighborhoods reflect the island\u2019s rich cultural and ethnic history dating back to the 19th century. We\u2019ll begin our tour with a visit to Little India. As soon as you step into \u00abLittle India,\u00bb you can\u2019t help but notice the \u00abIndian\u00bb character of this place: the aromas of spices and herbs, fragrant jasmine garlands; the gleam of silver and copperware; the extraordinary colors of silk saris and the gold of sparkling bracelets. This riot of colors and scents will transport you in an instant to India itself. Next, our journey takes us to \u00abKampong Glam,\u00bb a little slice of the Middle East in Singapore\u2014also known as the Arab Quarter. Once upon a time, here at the mouth of the Rochor River, there was a fishing village, but thanks to strong Arab-Malay influence, the village transformed into a Muslim commercial district. It is here that the Istana, the palace of the Malay royal family, is located; it now houses the Malay Heritage Center. The gleaming golden dome of the Sultan Mosque can be seen from afar. It is currently the largest mosque in Singapore, and it is here that the main Hari Raya celebrations take place every year after Ramadan. You\u2019ll stroll along the famous Bussora pedestrian street and sample traditional Malay Teh Tarik tea at one of the many cafes housed in historic shop houses. Next, Chinatown awaits you; it was here, in the early 19th century, that immigrants from southern China settled. Today, Chinatown is a neighborhood of historic shop houses, ultra-modern offices, tea houses, and pubs. Here, as everywhere in Singapore, you can feel the blend of several cultures and civilizations: Chinese temples stand side by side with mosques. You\u2019ll visit the oldest Hindu temple, Sri Mariamman, dedicated to the mother goddess of rain, protector against diseases and epidemics. You\u2019ll stroll through the streets of Chinatown and learn about the \u00abcoolies,\u00bb \u00abrickshaws,\u00bb and \u00absam sui\u00bb women. Return to the hotel around 1:00 p.m.<\/p>\n
